Hockey season is just around the corner, so let’s talk football!

The Seattle Seahawks and Pete Carroll certainly caught my attention over the past few seasons for their play on the field, but recently I have also been impressed by their attention to detail off the field. Let’s go back a few seasons… to a 2013 ESPN article* in which head coach Pete Carroll ssaid,

“I wanted to find out if we went to the NFL and really took care of guys, really cared about each and every individual, what would happen?”

The article continued, “The big idea is that happy players make for better players. Everyone in the facility, from coaches and players to personal assistants and valets, is expected to follow Carroll’s mantras regarding positivity of thought, words and actions. ” ‘Do your job better than it has ever been done before,’ he tells them. Yelling and swearing are frowned upon, and every media interview with a player or coach ends with a thank-you to the reporter.”

Pete Carroll is paying attention to what he thinks is important… and it’s working. Not only is he creating new awareness, but he is also intentionally, positively influencing the mindset of his players. Focusing on the Mental Skills right alongside the Physical Skills is a huge advantage in today’s professional sports. Let me ask you this simple question, how would this work for you and your team? What are you paying attention to? What is your advantage?

In our next book we will introduce our new model (in use now with our Corporate and Performance Coaching clients) that practically illuminates exactly what Pete Carroll is espousing. Our model is called the Thinking Tendencies Model and it helps players (and all of us) to self-identify their thinking, their mindset and then teaches them how to SHIFT it. Our best, most creative, most energized games are played within the confines of an optimal mindset. The TTM helps people activate this mindset, thereby increasing their probability of personal success.

In the same article, Seattle star quarterback Russell Wilson nails this MINDSET concept: “We do imagery work and talk about having that innovative mindset of being special,” Wilson says. “We talk about being in the moment and increasing chaos throughout practice, so when I go into the game, everything is relaxed.”

Wilson continued, “I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great. I believed that before I got here, and the crazy thing is, Coach Carroll and our football team believe it too.

So do we! Our Thinking Tendencies Model and our next book is completely focused on making what Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson believe… a positive, successful reality for you tool!

More to come; enjoy the season!
